FAQ

Marine Survey Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A MARINE SURVEY?

A critical examination or inspection of a marine vessel for bank financing, insurance, pre-purchase and damage.

WHAT DOES THE SURVEY MEAN TO THE BUYER OR OWNER?

As a buyer, it assists you in determining whether the vessel is structurally and operationally in safe and seaworthy condition, whether the vessel requires serious repair and calculating it's value for financing and insurance purposes.  It can also help the buyer negotiate a more favorable purchase price.

WHAT DOES THE SURVEY MEAN TO THE FINANICAL INSTITUTION?

Usually, vessels are financed up to a certain percentage of their value.  The survey will establish the value of your vessel and deficiencies for the financial institution.

HOW OFTEN IS A SURVEY REQUIRED?

It depends on the insurance and/or financing company, the value of the vessel, special circumstances and the vessels age.  For safety considerations, a survey is recommended every 2-4 years.

HOW MUCH DOES A SURVEY COAST?

The fee is based on the size of the vessel.  This charge covers only the cost of a basic survey.  Other additional charges can apply.

HOW LONG WILL THE SURVEY TAKE?

The survey will take between 4-8 hours depending on the size of the vessel and any special circumstances.  We can normally perform the survey within 48-72 hours of initial contact and have a completed report ready within 72 hours.  The report in PDF format will be emailed to the client, financial institution and or insurance company.

SHOULD YOU BE PRESENT DURING THE SURVEY?

We encourage all clients to be present and we will be happy to explain all aspects of the survey.
